Lazio 1974: Great and Cursed”

May 12th remains an indelible date for Lazio fans. Half a century ago, Giorgio Chinaglia’s memorable penalty against Foggia earned Tommaso Maestrelli’s Lazio team their first unmistakable championship in 1974. Sky Sport will celebrate the occasion by re-presenting it on Sky Sport Calcio at 7.30pm and on Sky Sport Uno at 11.30pm, and therefore available on demand on Sky and NOW, the three episodes of “Lazio 1974: grande e maledetta” with a renewed full version, replacing the original version broadcast in January this year.

Heroic Football Story:

The three episodes deem it necessary to narrate the epic story of that team which, led by Tommaso Maestrelli since 1971, went from Serie B to winning the Scudetto in just three years. They were years of mythological, almost heroic football, with a group of contrasting figures, but expertly managed by the coach, who managed to bring out the best in his players. However, the story suffered hard blows after the championship, costing the life of Maestrelli prematurely, due to an incurable disease, and of Luciano Re Cecconi, victim of a prank that ended tragically, still leading to numerous doubts today.

Fiftieth anniversary of the documentary:

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary, the documentary, broadcast at the beginning of 2024 with the three episodes “La grandeur”, “Guns and balls” and “The curse”, and produced in collaboration with SS Lazio, has been enriched with new interviews and contents. We had the opportunity to examine the film and Lazio together with Stefano De Grandis, the creator and curator of the project.

Interview with Stefano De Grandis:

In the interview, Stefano let emerge his point of view on that unforgettable team, the driving force that pushed her to want to tell this singular story, the stance she gave to the documentary and the possibility of revisiting a similar story in the future. De Grandis did not fail to talk about Tommaso Maestrelli, a coach who acted as a true psychologist, and became a prelude to the ‘psychologist’ coach of modern times. Finally, although he admits that football has changed, he believes that the love and affection for the team is alive in the current generation of fans.
