How many metro lines are there in Milan?

The Milan metro currently has a network of over 100 kilometers, covering a large area of the metropolis. The operational lines are as followswith relative color:

  • M1 (red);
  • M2 (green);
  • M3 (yellow);
  • M4 (blue);
  • M5 (lilac).

From a recent report by ATM (Milanese Transport Company) it appears that during the week, a constant flow of approximately 1.151 million people moves on the underground rails every day. The history of the M6 metro in Milan

The debate around the M6 is certainly not new, in fact it dates back to 2010, when the initial project was conceived under the administration of Letizia Moratti. Since then, the intentions have undergone changes, by virtue of the continuous and rapid changes which are registered in the urban and social fabric of the city, especially in the suburbs not reached by the metro, and which are expanding and need new stimuli and works of urban redevelopment. Even the color of the future interprovincial line is changing from orange to pink line.

The enthusiasm for the pink M6 has never waned, in fact it was supported with funding dedicated to the feasibility study of the project, a crucial step in evaluating costs and modifications. In 2022, the Draghi government has awarded 732.2 million euros for extensions of existing lines, for the first metro that will connect Monza and Milanbut also for the study on the M6.

What are the stops on the M6

Although details on the route of the future M6 have not yet been made public, the main objective is to cover the suburbs not yet reached by the tracks of the Milan metro, starting from the city center.

The proposed route for the pink line should follow the axis of viale Certosa and Sempione a Northwest and Tibaldi-Ripamonti a Southwith the aim of serving Municipality 5, currently less integrated into the metro network and served only by the Abbiategrasso-Chiesa Rossa stop on the M2.

As for the terminals, several hypotheses have been put forward over the years. To the south-east, Lambro Bridge has been indicated as a possible terminus, while for the northern part of the city, the solutions are different and need to be evaluated. Here you are what could be the ends of the line:

  • Fourth Oggiaro;
  • Baggio;
  • Freight – Cascina Merlata MIND.

The pink line certainly predicts intersections with other metro lines. Among the hypotheses, the following crosses are envisaged:

  • With the M1 to Pagano;
  • With the M2 to Porta Genova;
  • With the M3 to Porta Romana.

Further connections were hypothesized with the M5 at Domodossola and with the M3 at Missori or Rogoredo. The future pink line should touch approximately 40 stops.
