The news of the start of collective dismissal procedures at the Spazio Conad supermarket in the Conca d’oro shopping center in Palermo is raining like a bolt from the blue. An ordeal that has lasted for years and which is experiencing another difficult moment for workers who hoped to have found stability.
The communication from the company began yesterday evening and with it the collective dismissal procedures begin for the employees of the Spazio Conad ex Auchan who had moved from via Ugo la Malfa to Conca d’oro, changing, over the years, various companies and two signs. It is, in fact, the supermarket originally in via Ugo La Malfa in Palermo.
Auchan’s farewell and the sign changes
It all starts with Auchan’s farewell. The supermarket and its employees had moved under the new Margherita Conad banner at Conca d’Oro. It was just the first step. Then the market passed to Pianeta Cospea and finally to the Abbate group, Conad Ipermercati, but always remaining Conad.
40 out of 127 workers at risk
Late yesterday, the group that owns the market sent notice of the start of the collective dismissal procedure, declaring a redundancy of 40 staff units out of 127 employees. In fact, in the last five or six years there has been no peace for these workers. A reduction that is necessary, Abbate Ipermercati wrote to the unions, due to the unsustainability of costs.
Unions ready to mobilize

We are ready to immediately involve the institutions too – declare the general secretary Filcams Cgil Palermo Giuseppe Aiello and the provincial secretary Alessia Gatto – It would be a serious damage for these workers, who have an average age close to 50 years, with dependent families: this means which will be difficult to relocate and most likely destined for a poor future”.
