The Pink Jersey Tadej Pogacar wins the head-to-head with Filippo Ganna, achieving his second personal success at the Giro d’Italia and increasing the margin with his direct rivals in the general classification. The 40.6 km of the Foligno-Perugia Tudor ITT outlined the ideal scenario for the Slovenian who, 47″ behind Ganna at the second intermediate stage, unleashed all his power in the final uphill stretch, closing with 17″ on the Italian champion and 49 ″ on Magnus Sheffield. The gaps between their ranking rivals are heavy with Daniel Felipe Martinez (1’49”) overtaking Geraint Thomas (2’00”) in second place. Among the other big names in the general standings also Antonio Tiberi (1’21”), the new Maglia Bianca Lucas Plapp (1’45”), Ben O’Connor (2’07”), Cian Uijtdebroeks (2’55”), and Einer Rubio (4’20”).
The stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar declared in a press conference: “Winning in the Maglia Rosa was exciting, as was wearing it these days. I could see the warmth of the fans on the streets, where everyone shouts my name. I have a new time trial bike since last year, so with the team we started working on my position. I feel more comfortable and aerodynamic than before. The final result shows that we worked well. I am positively surprised by myself and at the same time I was surprised by the gap with Geraint Thomas and Daniel Martinez but nothing is decided, there is still a long way to go before arriving in Rome. Many will try to take risks by attacking from afar, but I have a very strong team.”
