Naples, 3.7 magnitude earthquake in the Campi Flegrei today

In the last few weeks alone, a rise in the ground of about two centimeters has been recorded due to bradyseism. As public concern grows, scientists continue to debate the possible causes of this increase in seismic activity, debating whether the magma is moving towards the surface or is still confined at depth.

A double earthquake hit the Flegrea area today, Friday 10 May, at 1.25pm and 1.26pm, with two intense seismic events of magnitude 3.6 and 3.7, both with epicenters in the sea, in front of the coast of Pozzuoli. The population perceived the telluric movements as a single long vibration. The tremors were preceded by a loud roar and were clearly felt not only in the municipalities of the Phlegraean area, but also in various neighborhoods of Naples, especially the western and hilly ones. Many people living in the Campi Flegrei said they took to the streets or rushed their children’s return home from school.

The alert continues

Today’s two earthquakes were immediately followed by a 1.7 magnitude shock, in line with the seismic activity underway in the last few hours. The Municipality of Pozzuoli reported a sequence of seismic events underway in the Campi Flegrei area since 12.31 local time and invited citizens to report any damage or inconvenience to the emergency numbers provided. In recent times, the INGV instruments have recorded an increase in seismic activity and tremors compared to the normal evolution of bradyseism. The night between 6 and 7 May was characterized by over thirty tremors, followed by a new sequence of seismic events on the afternoon of 7 May. On April 27, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded, also felt for the first time in Ischia. On April 29th there were 37 tremors, almost always accompanied by explosions. In the last few weeks alone, a rise in the ground of about two centimeters has been recorded due to bradyseism. As public concern grows, scientists continue to debate the possible causes of this increase in seismic activity, debating whether the magma is moving towards the surface or is still confined at depth.
