Wolfsburg wins the women’s German Cup

Wolfsburg beats Bayern Munich in the final and wins the DFB Pokal Frauen, or the women’s German Cup.

Bayern Munich, fresh champions of Germany, fail to achieve the double. Wolfsburg wins 2-0 and wins the trophy, thus saving an otherwise totally unsuccessful season.

44,400 spectators were present to watch the German Cup final in Cologne. Therefore, almost sold out at the RheinEnergieStadion, which can hold up to just over 46 thousand people.

The green and whites, therefore, extend the record of the greatest number of German Cups won with 11 successes. Wolfsburg then leads further. FFC Frankfurt, which held the record for 9 finals won in the competition.

Furthermore, Tommy Stroot’s team extends another record it already holds, namely that of the greatest number of German Cups won consecutively. The green and whites, in fact, have won the trophy for 10 editions in a row, i.e. since 2015. Also in this case they took the lead from Frankfurt, who held it thanks to 5 victories in a row between 1999 and 2003.

Finally, Wolfsburg extends their streak of consecutive German Cup results to 50. In fact, the green and whites have not lost a match in the competition since 16 November 2013, when they lost 1-0 in the round of 16 against Frankfurt, who went on to win that edition.

The match report

Despite less ball possession (47%), Wolfsburg clearly dominated the first half in terms of chances. In fact, in the first 45 minutes the green and whites kicked 12 times: 6 shots on target and the same number blocked. Bayern Munich, on the other hand, is unable to create chances: only a couple of shots, of which only one is on target.

Wolfsburg broke the deadlock after just 14 minutes thanks to a goal by Jule Brand assisted by Lena Oberdorf, already betrothed to Bayern Munich starting next season. Brand mocks the German goalkeeper with a shot from outside the area that bounces very close to Maria-Luisa Grohs.

In the 40th minute the green and whites also scored the second goal with Dominique Janssen’s header directly from the corner kicked by Svenja Huth.

In the second half, Bayern increased their possession and had a few more chances: 5 shots in the second half, a couple of which were on target. Wolfsburg, thanks to their advantage, did not press on the accelerator and created less: only 3 shots in the second half, of which only one was on target.
