Frost. Luigi Messina, as soon as he was born, lost his life after surgery at the “Garibaldi-Nesima” hospital in Catania. The facts date back eight years ago. The judge of the Etna court sentenced Salvatore Agati, head of cardiac surgery at the “San Vincenzo di Taormina” hospital, to one year and two months in prison, with a suspended sentence. Same decision for the heart surgeon Fabrizio Gandolfo. However, the cardiologist Marcello Campisi of the “Garibaldi-Nesima” hospital was acquitted. The investigations revealed the responsibility of the doctors who intervened on the newborn immediately after birth. There would have been an error in the activities carried out to correct the “patency of the ductus arteriosus”, resulting instead in the closure of the left pulmonary artery. A second intervention was necessary, but according to the investigators it was now “late”. The damage, explained the prosecutor, was “irreversible”. Luigi’s death affected the lives of his parents, Giuseppe Messina and Norina Pirrera, who also through the “Aria Nuova” association denounced the facts, triggering more investigations. The spouses are civil parties, assisted by lawyers Antonio Cozza, Carmen Toro and Giuseppe Ferraro.
