Thanks to the SIAD Group’s investment, up to 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the Enviral company’s bioethanol production plant in Leopoldov

The SIAD Groupin collaboration with Envirala member of the Envien Group and Slovenské Liehovary a likérky, has installed a new plant for the capture and liquefaction of biogenic carbon dioxide.

The plant, developed in Leopoldov (Slovak Republic)helps to significantly reduce CO emissions2 from fossil fuels, and was created by SIAD through its SIAD Slovakia company And Tecno Project Industriale. SIAD Slovakia, founded in 1998, supplies technical, medical and specialty gases, and will distribute carbon dioxide in the Slovak market and neighboring countries. The carbon dioxide capture technology is designed by Tecno Project Industriale (TPI), a SIAD Group company specialized in the capture, recovery and liquefaction of CO2. The carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction plant required a investment by SIAD of approximately 11 million euros. The plant will generate new direct and indirect jobs for approximately 10 people. Thanks to the investment of the SIAD Group, a reduction of up to 30% in greenhouse gas emissions at the bioethanol production plant of the Enviral company in Leopoldov (Slovak Republic).

The SIAD Group and the Envien Group have decided to develop this project together thanks to their mutual strengths. On the one hand, the SIAD Group has already installed more than 300 carbon dioxide capture plants around the world, on the other hand, Enviral’s plant in Leopoldov is ideal for TPI technology thanks to the capacity and purity of the CO2 raw biogenic from the fermentation process and existing industrial infrastructure. The use of carbon dioxide is very broad, as it is used as a food ingredient in carbonated drinks, food preservation, the intensification of plant cultivation in sustainable greenhouses and vertical farms, for cooling, sandblasting and cleaning , water treatment and refrigerated transport.

“In the carbon dioxide supply chain, as well as in other markets linked to the energy transition such as hydrogen, biomethane and the environment, the SIAD Group uniquely combines the know-how and solutions of its engineering sector with innovative applications of industrial gases. I am proud of our Group’s Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization (CCUS) technologies and the expertise of our engineers and technicians, who create a unique solution for the environment and customers,” he said Bernardo Sestini, President and CEO of the SIAD Group.

TPI technology captures CO2 biogenic from the gas produced during the fermentation phase in the production of bioethanol: corn starch is transformed into ethyl alcohol through a biotechnological process. Fermentation gases containing CO2 they are transported via a pipeline to the SIAD plant for final purification and liquefaction. The CO2 food grade is stored in cryogenic tanks and then transported to customers.

The annual production capacity is 40,000 tons of CO2 biogenic for food use, with a potential increase to 80,000 tonnes in the second phase of the project. This makes it the only and largest facility of its kind in Slovakia. This quantity represents approximately one third of the CO2 total produced by Enviral during bioethanol production. Recovering the CO2 biogenic, the carbon footprint of bioethanol is reduced, obtaining partially neutral emissions. “Thanks to this technology, we are able to capture and liquefy carbon dioxide of biogenic origin, thus avoiding the extraction of carbon dioxide of fossil origin from underground sources. Instead, it is captured directly from production at our factory and is not released freely into the air. This beneficial effect on the environment, in the form of CO reduction2 fossil, it is not negligible at all,” he declared Peter KostikCEO of the Envien Group.

The SIAD Group

SIAD is one of the main Italian chemical groups, with a 2023 turnover of over 1 billion euros, 70,000 customers and 2,278 employees worldwide. Founded in Bergamo in 1927, chaired and administered by Bernardo Sestini, it boasts a strong tradition and experience. The SIAD Group is present in Europe and around the world and operates in the industrial gas, engineering, healthcare, natural gas and LPG sectors.
Since its foundation, values such as Solidity, Innovation, Authenticity and Difference have allowed the SIAD Group to grow, continuing to expand year after year in a responsible and sustainable way.
