Even when it seems like there’s nothing left to do, when everything seems lost, that’s where the best miracles happen. Because it is precisely the darkest hour before the dawn.

The word Gospel comes from Latin evangeliumadaptation of the Greek εὐαγγέλιον, which we could translate as “good news“, as it is composed of εὐ «good, good» and ἄγγελος «messenger, announcement». So, when we receive good news, we are happy.

He writes Pope francesco in the apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (the joy of the Gospel): “The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and entire lives of those who encounter Jesus. Those who allow themselves to be saved by Him are freed from sin, from sadness, from internal emptiness, from isolation.” Then he continues: “The great risk of the current world, with its multiple and oppressive offer of consumption, is an individualistic sadness that arises from the comfortable and stingy heart, from the sick search for superficial pleasures, from the isolated conscience. When the interior life closes in on one’s own interests there is no longer room for others, the poor no longer enter, the voice of God is no longer listened to, the sweet joy of his love is no longer enjoyed, the enthusiasm of do good. This is not the choice of a dignified and full life, this is not God’s desire for us, this is not the life in the Spirit that flows from the heart of the risen Christ.”

“The evil one – he observes Saint Francis de Sales – enjoys sadness and melancholy, because he is, and will be for eternity, sad and melancholy; so he would like everyone to be like that! ” (Philothea, chapter XII). “The enemy – continues the saint – uses the sadness to bring his temptations against the good; on the one hand he tries to make sinners cheerful in their sins, and on the other hand he tries to make good people sad in their good works”. On the one hand, the evil one tries to present evil in a pleasant way, while, on the other, he tries to distract us from good by making it seem unpleasant.
