Riello: today meeting at the ministry on the future of the Morbegno plant

Today the meeting at the Ministry, on Monday the workers’ assembly and on the 16th the hearing in the regional commission, the one postponed from May 2nd. Important days for Riello di Morbegno, the company owned since 2020 by the multinational Carrier corporation which has announced its closure by the summer. The meeting of the trade unions at the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy is scheduled for this morning, where the procedure for divesting the Valtellina industrial site has been started.

A fundamental meeting to understand if and what margins for negotiation there are. So far the company has expressed itself with a note guaranteeing “dialogue with all interested parties, in full compliance with the law, to reduce the impact on employees”, but also confirming the decision “to transfer production activities from the Morbegno plant to factories with available capacity in Italy” to “optimize our industrial footprint and will help to better position Riello in an increasingly competitive global market”.

After this morning’s meeting the picture will be clearer. What comes out of it will be the main topic of the assembly of workers, 61 in total, which has already been convened for Monday. At that meeting the employees, who suspended their strikes while waiting for the meeting at the Mise, will evaluate what to do. But what the company says will also be a matter of discussion and comparison in Milan, in the Region where a hearing is scheduled for the 16th in the competent commission in the presence of representatives of the local territorial institutions who immediately sided with the workers aware that the closure of the Morbegna plant would lead to serious impoverishment for the socio-economic fabric of the entire province. Meanwhile, on the eve of the meeting at the Mise, the workers made their voices of indignation and regret heard, recalling that the settlement was possible thanks to the funds from the Valtellina law. In short, the territory has given a lot and now asks for something in return.
