Trieste – A decidedly “invigorating” Preview event, is the preview of the 2024 Scienza e comma Festival dedicated to “The physics of coffee”, scheduled for Sunday 12 May at 11am in the spaces of the Antico Caffè and Libreria San Marco in Trieste, co-promoter of the event.

A good coffee is the ideal viaticum, and in this conference-workshop Eugenia Fenzi, director of the Antico Caffè e Libreria San Marco, and Alberto Polojac, director of the Bloom Coffee School, will discuss. Together they will explore the physical principles underlying each phase of the coffee preparation process: from roasting to extraction, in a fascinating journey through the science of one of the most loved and widespread drinks in the world. And on Sunday 19 May, again as part of the Science and Media Festival promoted by the SISSA Interdisciplinary Laboratory, another experiential event at Caffè San Marco: at 11am the panel “How is biodiversity? Word to the bees”, a dialogue between Michele Bottazzo, forestry technician specialized in agro-environment and biodiversity, project manager of Veneto Agricoltura for the Interreg Italy – Slovenia Bee2gether project, and Eugenia Fenzi, linked to the issues of biodiversity and the most suitable and sustainable. Followed, from 12.30pm, by the tasting dedicated to local honey and its production in the Italian and Slovenian Karst, with the expert in sensorial analysis of honey Maria Luisa Zoratti, representative of Slow Food Alpine Honeys of Alta Montagna FVG. At Scienza e Virgola 2024 a supporting path will also be marked by theatrical events and author screenings: an “on stage” production marks the grand finale of the festival, Tuesday 21 May, “Galileo (R)evolution – The Path of Science” at 8pm at the Miela Theatre. The event, in collaboration with the AIRC Foundation, features the scientific communicator Massimo Polidoro together with the AIRC researchers Pier Paolo Di Fiore and Anna Chiara De Luca: the opportunity to delve into the challenges and successes, difficulties and satisfactions that people who face every day they dedicate their lives to research. This is followed by the screening of Galileo (R) evolution, a parallel docufilm between the life of the great scientist and his legacy, directed by Carlo Borean and produced by Berta Film / Kahuna Film in collaboration with the Galileo Galilei Museum. The evening before, Monday 20 May, again at the Miela Theatre, the physicist, writer, journalist, playwright and theater actress Gabriella Greison presents “Everything is connected”, an event in collaboration with the Miela Bonawentura Theatre. The journey to discover the secrets of one of the most important quantum physicists of the 20th century, Wolfgang Pauli, defined by Albert Einstein as “his only and worthy successor”. A common thread “on stage” also for the event “The words I didn’t say. Me, grandfather Dino and Alzheimer’s”, Monday 20 May at 6.30 pm at the Teatro Dei Fabbri, in collaboration with the Pezcoller Foundation An Arditodesìo production based on a text by the director Andrea Brunello and the researcher Luca Marchetti who was inspired by the story of his grandfather Dino, the which has dedicated its research activity aimed at developing predictive models in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. And the event “What is life?” is also in collaboration with the Pezcoller Foundation. What is life?” on stage on Monday 20 May, at 2pm in the “Ernesto Mari” prison in Trieste: What is life? What is life? was the title of the series of lectures by the famous physicist Erwin Schrödinger, who took refuge in Ireland during the Second World War. A physicist and an actress, Gianluca Lattanzi and Maura Pettorruso, will try to answer these questions.

Two further events for the big screen at the festival: on Saturday 18 May, at 11.30 at the Miela Theatre, “Radioactive” will be screened, the biopic directed by the well-known Iranian author of Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi, based on the graphic novel by Lauren Redniss, Radioactive tells the incredible story of Marie Curie (played by Rosamund Pike): her passionate relationships, scientific advances and the consequences these had on her and the rest of the world. Her meeting with fellow scientist Pierre Curie, whom she married, changed the history of science forever thanks to the discovery of radioactivity. The event is promoted in collaboration with the Casa del Cinema Association of Trieste, introduced by science historian Marco Ciardi and Daniele Terzoli, from the board of directors of La Cappella Underground. And again on Saturday 18 May, at 9pm at the Miela Theater, the screening of the film “To the End”, directed by Rachel Lears, which reconstructs the birth and growth of the “Green New Deal”, from the protests in the streets to the halls of the Congress of United States, through the stories of four leaders and activists: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Varshini Prakash, Alexandra Rojas and Rhiana Gunn-Wright. The event is organized in collaboration with the Casa del Cinema Association of Trieste, introduced by the Director of the RAI Friuli Venezia Giulia office Guido Corso, the environmental activist Sara Segantin and Daniele Terzoli, co-founder of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival.
