Legambiente Vda, Valle Virtuosa, “Hands off the waters and CVA” Committee, Attac Valle d’Aosta are so convinced of this that they have released a document which indicates the strategic way to make Valle d’Aosta self-sufficient. In fact, they explain in the document that the Valley has an extraordinary opportunity: the possibility of achieving energy self-sufficiency by using exclusively renewable energy sources. They also specify: “The Aosta Valley has unique environmental conditions that favor the use of various renewable sources and the Valdostane Water Company (CVA), being entirely regionally owned, is a key player in this process”. And they reiterate: “Our document explains how, with adequate political commitment, we can transform our region into a model of energy sustainability, completely free from the use of fossil fuels”.

There is no doubt that Valle d’Aosta is facing an important challenge: the reduction of polluting emissions and the abandonment of fossil fuels by 2040. This ambitious mission is supported by an agenda approved by the Regional Council in 2018 and the 2021 RoadMap. However, the path towards energy self-sufficiency requires a radical change in the region’s energy policy.

Save Energy and Preserve the Environment

A key tactic is energy conservation. Reducing leaks and waste is crucial to cutting costs and reducing air pollution. This involves a change in mobility, promoting public transport and sharing cars. Furthermore, the responsible use of water resources is vital for the production of hydroelectric energy.

Renewable Energy and Energy Autonomy

Valle d’Aosta has the potential to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2040, exploiting renewable sources such as water, sun, wind, geothermal and biomass. However, there are challenges to address, such as optimizing hydropower and transitioning the transportation sector to electric vehicles.

The Crucial Role of the Valle d’Aosta Water Company (CVA)

The CVA, created to manage energy production in the interest of the region, must adapt to new energy objectives. This includes investments in renewable energy, promotion of self-consumption of energy and modernization of distribution networks.

Hydroelectric Concessions and the Need for Legislation

The imminent expiration of hydroelectric concessions requires urgent legislative intervention. The Region must acquire legislative competence and approve a regional law that takes into account European and national regulations. This law should allow the transfer of concessions to a publicly controlled company, ensuring responsible use of water resources and fair compensation for environmental damage.

In summary – for Legambiente Vda, Valle Virtuosa, ‘Hands off the waters and CVA’ Committee, Attac Valle d’Aostala Valle d’Aosta “has the opportunity to become an example of energy sustainability, but this will require a political vision farsighted and concrete actions aimed at maximizing the use of renewable sources and preserving the environment for future generations”.
