«Months of agitation and mobilization have not affected the position of the rector Antonella Polimeni who continues to refuse a public meeting, avoiding dialogue with the students». These are the words of the boys and girls of the collectives who have been in tents on the lawn of La Sapienza University of Rome since yesterday evening. The students reiterate their demands: «What we want is an academic boycott – they say – we ask for the interruption of all agreements with the Zionist regime and with the war industry. Peace means not legitimizing a regime of apartheid and oppression, it means not building the bombs with which war will be waged. Exactly the opposite of what La Sapienza University does instead.”
«If our university wants to work towards peace, the rector will have to take on the responsibility of coming to explain what their idea of peace is – they add – Our rector Antonella Polimeni is too personally involved to expose herself. From the links with Zionism to your role in the business of Leonardo Spa, you are a political collaborator for which you will have to account.” Before 14 and 15 May, which “will be two days of great mobilization”, when the academic senate will take place at Sapienza and on the day of remembrance of the Nakba, the children ask “that the rector accept a public meeting at the garrison” on the lawn.
Call for mobilization
The students then invite everyone to join them “bringing a tent or even just passing by”. “We will be here until we are heard, otherwise it means we will have to shout louder,” they conclude. The mobilization program includes “two permanent tables” every day, from 10 to 12. One on “fighting practices” and another on “mapping agreements”. Today, at 3pm, the students will “beautify and enlarge” the garrison and tomorrow at 6pm there will also be a meeting with the teachers “on the academic boycott”.
