With the eighth generation of the basic flagship model Google seems to have finally hit the target 100%. Not that the predecessors were failures, but in this round the Mountain View giant has improved practically all the key aspects and kept a reasonable size, making it a real compact top. Among other things, software support also drastically improves, with 7 years of guaranteed feature updates and at least the same number of security patches. The smartphone was released in autumn 2023 already with Android 14, and therefore in theory Android…21 will arrive in 2030!
Google continues with its approach based on two great pillars: software and photography, and both they owe a lot to artificial intelligence. The third generation custom Tensor chip, also produced by Samsung, will not be up to par with the best Snapdragon in terms of pure benchmarks but has an edge in machine learning operations. Google also has almost unbeatable know-how from a software point of view; it follows that the photographic sector manages to bring out truly phenomenal results even if on paper the hardware is not the best around.
Google did too big steps forward on the display side – the 6.2″ FHD+ unit reaches 120 Hz refresh rate and above all has a maximum brightness of even 2,000 nits. The battery is OK but the combination of capacity (4,500 mAh) and charging speed (27 W wired) is not certainly make it the ideal choice for intense gaming, even if in general at the end of the evening you can get there with great agility even with intense use.
