RIETI – For the death of Cecilia Marottoli, the 23-year-old student from L’Aquila, Red Cross volunteer, who lost her life in July 2019, following a serious road accident in the Reatino area, a huge compensation of 850 thousand euros has now been requested for damages of the young man who, at the time of the accident, was with her: he is Francesco Serani, 36 years old from Rieti, resident in Antrodoco, now on trial.

The process. In the act of incorporation as a civil party, the lawyers Maria Teresa Di Rocco and Antonio Valentini, both of the L’Aquila Court (trusted lawyers of the young woman’s parents), as well as retracing the ordeal of the victim’s mother and father for the loss of the daughter, underlined the existence of the so-called alternative hypothesis against the accused and endorsed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rieti itself. That is, whether the vehicle was driven by the man from Rieti, under investigation, or whether the victim was driving, Serani should still be considered responsible for what happened. There is no absolute certainty on this point.

The dynamics. An alternative, in fact, which would still place Serani equally responsible for the death of her friend, as he could not and should not have made her drive a modified vehicle (that the young woman was driving is the thesis declared by the man, the only survivor) , because she was inexperienced, also in relation to the type of dirt and particularly impervious stretch of road that she was traveling on at that moment, moreover with an unserviced off-road vehicle.
The accident occurred in the mountain stretch that connects Rocca di Corno with Piano della Mozza, above Antrodoco. Fingers pointed by the prosecution on the installation of tires larger than the registration document, on the structure modified through a kit that made it higher from the ground. The engine had also been over-powered, again through the installation of a kit to upgrade the turbine, aimed at obtaining an increase in engine torque at low speeds. The driver then lost control and the off-road vehicle, after a jump of approximately 13 metres, landed on the ground and then bounced and subsequently rotated, finally ending the ride in an upside down position, with the roof in contact with the ground. When the rescuers arrived on site, the young girl still showed some faint signs of life, which vanished after a short while. Serani had been transferred to L’Aquila hospital, not in serious condition.
