Show Desktop won on Copilot

In mid-February, update KB5034765 for Windows 11 it brought with it something new that not everyone liked: it replaced the button Show desktop (hidden in the lower right corner of the interface) with the icon Copilot, for quickly launching the AI assistant. Fortunately, there was an about-face.

The Show Desktop button is back on Windows 11

To make it known is Microsoft, with the post published in recent days on the official blog dedicated to Insiders in which he declares that he has changed his mind. The feedback received was decisive. Here is what we read, in translated form.

In response to feedback, we are now displaying the Show Desktop button by default. Users can still manage this by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing “Taskbar Settings.”

L’option to which the software house refers is the one shown in the screenshot below. It is found within the “Settings”, selecting the “Personalization” section and then the “Taskbar” item. In the “Taskbar Behaviors” pane, you must enable the checkmark on “Select the end of the taskbar to display the desktop” to avoid automatic replacement.

For many, especially for those who are used to multitasking by managing a large number of windows at the same time, the small invisible Show Desktop button is very helpful, to minimize all open screens with just one click and find yourself in front of the desk in an instant. It can be reached simply by moving the cursor to the bottom right, with a gesture that has now become automatic for many.

That Microsoft is doing everything it can to promote the use of the tools generative artificial intelligence (mostly based on OpenAI technology) there is no doubt. Not everyone, however, is enthusiastically welcoming the impact of Copilot and other features of this kind on the operating system. Many would prefer a more essential experience or at least the possibility of choosing what to install and what to exclude from the platform.
