Urgent Umbrian Opposition to Pro-life Policy in the Counseling Sector

Regional councilors Meloni and Bori launch a motion to oppose the changes to the Pnrr decree and support women’s rights.

In a climate of growing concern for women’s rights in Italy, the regional councilors of the Democratic Party, Simona Meloni and Tommaso Bori, have taken a position against the recent measures introduced by the Meloni Government, which would allow pro-life associations to operate at inside the family clinics. This decision emerged with the approval of an amendment to the Pnrr decree, raising considerable concerns about the possible implications on voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) services and women’s health.

On May 4, Meloni and Bori presented a motion urging the Umbria regional council to strengthen funding for clinics, essential structures to guarantee the protection of women’s health in a context of freedom and autonomy. These centers are fundamental, not only for the management of IVG, but also for the overall support of reproductive health, representing a pillar of public health established immediately after the historic law 194/1978.

Law 194 establishes a delicate balance between access to the right to IVG and the safety of procedures, both in public structures of the National Health Service and in private affiliated ones. However, the introduction of external parties such as pro-life associations into the Clinics risks compromising this balance, introducing potential obstacles for women seeking to access these critical services.

Meloni and Bori highlighted how the Government’s approach not only puts the rights achieved at risk, but also reflects a worrying trend already observed in other regions governed by the right, where similar measures have sought to limit women’s self-determination. They also referred to the contrast with the situation in France, where rights related to IVG were recently incorporated into the Constitution, signaling a more progressive and protective direction of women’s rights.

Meloni and Bori’s motion therefore calls for a strengthening and strengthening of the clinics, emphasizing the importance of maintaining adequate and accessible services that respect women’s right to self-determination and health. Furthermore, they underline the need to adhere to the guidelines established by the Ministry of Health for pharmacological IVG, promoting outpatient solutions that reduce the need for hospitalization.

Through this action, councilors hope to mobilize substantial support to reject the proposed changes and preserve the progress made in protecting women’s rights in Italy.
