LECCE – Oral cavity tumors will be at the center of a meeting to be held on Saturday 4 May, starting at 6.30 pm, at the conference center of the Leone hotel in Messapia, on the Lecce-Cavallino provincial road. A very delicate topic because these are tumors which, unfortunately, are often diagnosed late due to underestimation of the symptoms.
There are various tumors of the mouth and they can affect the front part of the tongue, the internal surface of the cheeks and lips, the gums, the oral floor and other points. In Italy about 4 thousand cases are diagnosed every year. In young people the phenomenon still remains very rare, but the incidence increases with advancing age.
The particular tumor of the lip
According to studies conducted by Airc, the Italian foundation for cancer research, lip cancer develops more in men and especially affects those with fair skin and who spend a lot of time in the sun. It is a pathology which is particularly likely to be encountered by those who carry out jobs which require them to remain outdoors and under the sun for many hours. Among these categories of workers, the most affected are those of construction workers, farmers and fishermen. And pipe smokers are also added.
Good and correct lifestyles are the first step towards a form of prevention useful for avoiding or at least reducing risk factors. For this reason, eliminating or considerably reducing smoking and the use of alcohol is the first form of prevention to be implemented. Suffice it to say that the increase in cigarette consumption by women in recent years has been the factor that has triggered the resurgence of lip cancer in females. And just a few decades ago this type of tumor was almost non-existent. The meeting-debate on May 4th, therefore, will serve to raise awareness of this oncological pathology. Topics such as types, symptoms, prevention, diagnosis, evolution and treatments will be explored in depth.
The speakers
Among the speakers there will be Francesco Schittulli, internationally renowned oncologist, breast surgeon with more than 30 thousand operations under his belt, author of dozens of publications, elected national president of Lilt (Italian League against tumors), member of the scientific committee of the Institute health superior designated by the Minister of Health; Lorenzo Lo Muzio, specialist in odontostomatology and oncology, rector of the University of Foggia, professor of odontostomatological diseases, member of the scientific committee of the Higher Institute of Health designated by the Minister of Health and of the national scientific technical committee of Lilt; Andrea Tedesco, dentist, specialist in odontostomatological surgery, lecturer at the level II master’s degree in zygomatic implantology at the University of Pisa, president of the Italian Society of zygomatic and pterygoid implantology.
They will bring their greetings: the general director of the ASL of Lecce, Stefano Rossi, the provincial president of the Order of surgeons and dentists, Donato De Giorgi, the vice-president of the Order, Gino Peccarisi, the provincial president of the Lilt, Antonio Micaglio . The organization is the Santa Chiara Institute and Giovanni Vantaggiato, moderator of the evening Gianfranco Delle Rose.
