A utopia that is slowly transforming into a (hardly) possible dream. After savoring and enjoying it this year, the Champions League for the Lazio for the last two months it seemed like an unattainable goal. From the elimination of Monaco to Sarri’s resignation, no one at Lazio was thinking about the Europe that matters. If anything, the objective was to return to Europe, whatever that might be. The last three consecutive victories in the championship have instead restored hope and in this final rush Lazio can play their cards.
Objective: win them all
To reach that mirage that is fifth place, Lazio have the duty to win them all between now and the end of May. And if the matches against Monza, Empoli and Sassuolo will see the team from Tudor favorites, the away match at San Siro against champions Inter on matchday 37 represents the most complex challenge. Roma are 4 points away but have a very complicated calendar, Atalanta are at +2 but have a game to recover and an easy calendar. We need a miracle and winning them all might not even be enough, even if there is hope of sixth place. If one of Roma and Atalanta were to win the Europa League and finish fifth in the table, then the sixth-placed team would go to the Champions League.
We start again from Monza
The chase for the Champions League that began a few weeks ago will resume in Monza with the match against Palladino’s team. Tudor can rely on almost the entire squad, except only the Gila who will have them for at least another 2-3 weeks and even risks having finished the season. The latest return is that of Provedel, who has been training with the team for two days although he could start from the bench against the Brianza team. Few doubts in the other departments, with Zaccagni who will return to the starting lineup and will almost certainly start as a winger on the left in the 3-4-2-1 with the return of Marusic on the right. Felipe and Luis Alberto will support Castellanos, with Immobile now an alternative to Taty. In midfield the Guendouzi-Kamada pair could be confirmed, with Mandas between the posts favored over Provedel and in defense the trio of Patric, Romagnoli and Casale.
