A fire of waste and tires generated a huge cloud of black smoke that invaded theMedian axis of Naples: fear among motorists, who suddenly found themselves “crossing” the thick blanket of smoke that made it impossible to see on the other side. The fire broke out near the Lago Patria junction. Windows were barred by residents to prevent the strong nauseating smell from penetrating their homes. In all likelihood, the waste and tires that had been abandoned for some time along a small road adjacent to the Median Axis and which in recent days had also been “attended” by citizens who had reported the presence of this abandoned waste went up in flames.
Many cars stopped to avoid crossing the black cloud and risking an accident. The firefighters arrived on site with two tankers to put out the flames. The strong stench was most likely caused not only by rubbish and tyres, but also by large quantities of plastic that had gone up in flames. It is currently impossible to establish the causes of the fire: however, everything suggests that it was arson. The activists of the “Basta Roghi” group said they were “tired of having to suffer all this to the detriment of our health”. The fear is that as summer approaches these phenomena may begin to repeat themselves more frequently, with all the resulting risks for human health and the environment.
