“Was a paradoxical process with a illogical sentence“: thus the former president of the Chamber Gianfranco Fini commented on the first degree sentence of 2 years and 8 months in prison for having authorized the sale of “that damned house in Monte Carlo”. Fini, however, interviewed by Corriere della Serahe also underlined that “there was no fury. I was acquitted in all cases involving the crime of money laundering”.
He defined the trial as “paradoxical because it lasted 10 years between the first notice of guarantee and this sentence, and in the meantime the entrepreneur Corallo, who gave Giancarlo Tulliani the money to buy the apartment, was released from the judgment by statute of limitations. And out came his factotum, Laboccetta, who did not repeat his statements against me in the courtroom.” The sentence, however, would be “illogical” in his opinion because “I was acquitted of all the crimes connected to the effects of that sale. For all the facts that the Prosecutor’s Office accused me of, it was decided that either they did not constitute a crime, or they did not I had committed what would be my fault? Didn’t we foresee in 2008 what would happen in 2015?”.
The former president of the Chamber then reiterated that he had never known anything despite the facts concerning his partner, his brother-in-law and his father-in-law: “I didn’t know. There is no proof, a declaration, a fact that testifies to the opposite. If we had been, the conviction should have been for all charges. There is also nothing Elisabetta Tulliani which attests to it, as well as that of his brother Giancarlo himself, although a fugitive. I await the reasons. And of course I am counting on the full acquittal that already existed when I was acquitted in a first proceeding on the same facts.”
Speaking about the trial and his decision to leave politics, however, Fini revealed: “I was deeply distressed by those who perhaps accused me knowing me – Storace did it, now we are friends again – and those who rode the tiger of delegitimisation, and they done especially in right-wing environments. Then I convincedly voted for Meloni, and with conviction I decided to leave active politics.” Finally, up Silvio Berlusconi: “We never saw or heard from each other again. But when he died, I wrote what I thought, beyond personal relationships: he was a man of great humanity. Our mothers died in the same period: he was very close to me”.
