Ariano Irpino
What has been happening for months in Ariano Irpino, and in particular in the areas of Santa Barbara and Torana, is no longer tolerable. Continuous theft attempts, many of which were successful.
For this reason, the citizens of these two residential areas, legally guided by the lawyer Maria Grazia Santosuosso, and represented by the spokesperson Massimiliano Alberico Grasso, deemed it necessary to form a self-protection committee to solicit and promote actions and activities aimed at solving the problem.
“An entire community, the Arianese one, is now exhausted by an obsessive situation. Thefts have been more frequent since October 2023 and have grown exponentially.
In the period October/March 2023/24, the police were contacted in all situations and, within the limits of the personnel available, carried out control work in the most sensitive areas.
Patrols have increased to discourage criminals who appeared to have targeted the
territory.
In our opinion, a further strengthening of personnel in these areas is essential and cannot be postponed.
This phenomenon results in unbearable anxiety which has repercussions on the health of individual citizens and on public health, compromising the quality of life with so-called avoidance behaviors, making it impossible to lead a normal life especially for the citizens of Santa Barbara and Torana.
People’s movements are also limited as fear makes families organize themselves so that one member always remains at home to avoid leaving the property unattended. However, this was not always enough. The criminals entered homes where there were inhabitants.
The situation, in short, is disabling. Several citizens fell into depression and had to resort to psychological and psychiatric treatment. “Santa Barbara-Torana” anti-theft committee. After a period of stasis, which lasted about two months, February/March 2024, to date the reports and complaints for apartment thefts have increased again.
The fact that the phenomenon has continued constantly for more than 10 months indicates to us that the collaboration of citizens with the police is necessary through pertinent and useful reports to track down this gang of robbers.
The committee believes that the time has come to sit at a technical table in which we can discuss and try to find adequate solutions to the problem that is gripping the community.”
The committee, through the lawyer Santosuosso, requests that suitable planning be implemented to protect the residential areas in which we live.
“The network between citizens is very important but must be supported by the competent authorities. For this reason we turn to the prefect of Avellino Paola Spenato the prosecutor of Benevento Aldo Policastro and to the mayor of Ariano Irpino Enrico Franza so that we can make an appointment together to better outline the situation and find the appropriate solution.”
