Since 1994, May 1st has been a sad day for all sports enthusiasts and motoring enthusiasts in particular. In fact, it is the anniversary of the tragic death of one of the greatest and most beloved Formula 1 champions: Ayrton Senna.
Anyone over 30 has the dramatic images broadcast on television all over the world on that cursed day, when, at the Tamburello curve of the Imola circuit, the Brazilian driver crashed his Williams into a wall.
A frightening accident, which left him no escape. Broken steering, the technical reports will say.
Ayrton was 34 years old. And a career of a true champion: three world titles won, 41 victories, 80 podiums and 65 pole positions won, racing for four different teams. In addition to Williams, the early Toleman, Lotus and McLaren.
Exactly 30 years have passed and Senna, with his talent and class, has remained in the hearts of sportspeople. And for many, what a famous song reminds us of is truly true: “Since Senna no longer races… it’s no longer Sunday.”
