Angelo Longobardi he is the Italian champion of Taekwondo in the 59kg category. His victory at the Italian Championships in Rome 2024 tells a story of personal redemption but above all that of an entire suburb. Angelo is trained by his brothers and teachers Roberto and Domenico Longobardi, also champions in their own right.
It is the second time in a row that Angelo carries the colors of Castellammare and of the Acsd Stabiae Prana-Ki – Team Longobardi Taekwondo. His gold medal shines even more because it comes from the neighborhoods of Moscarella and Savorito, two districts which for Castellammare represent the city’s Bronx, where petty crime and drug dealing reign supreme. Where the difficulties are greater and collaboration and social cohesion have instead allowed Stabiae Pranaki to train its athletes at the “K. Wojtyla” comprehensive school gym. In those spaces found in Moscarella, but also in the branch offices of the CMI and Savorito, there are great champions such as the Lombard brothers but above all there is a record of attendance and participation every day. Very young people who are taken off the streets and many over 65s, 98 to be exact, who also train with their grandchildren every week. Stabiae Pranaki breaks many records as it has the highest number of members with the grandparents and grandchildren project and 370 students distributed in the 6 school buildings during curricular hours who practice taekwondo for free.
The medals cannot be counted, but the big hearts and strength of the brothers Lombards makes the medal collection shine even more. And now the latest success achieved at the age of 17 for Angelo, among around 700 athletes from all regions, is yet another record. The final was dominated and won clearly against the Sicilian athlete, Federico Basile, of the Taekwondo Sport Accademy company who could do nothing against the great speed, technique and power of the man from Stabia. An extraordinary meeting between two good athletes who embraced each other at the end of the final, eliciting great and long applause from the audience present. A great emotion that saw the fairness and loyalty of these extraordinary athletes triumph.
