Dalila Di Lazzaro on her son’s death: “We were very close”

Dalila Di Lazzaro she came back to talk about death of his son Christian. More than 30 years have passed but the pain remains alive in the heart of the actress, who unfortunately has experienced a lot of pain. “We were very close” she said in her last interview with Corriere della Sera, remembering how much beautiful he experienced for the short time allowed with him but also thinking about how much more beautiful he could have experienced in this future. “Today I would be a grandmother” she admitted bitterly.

Dalila Di Lazzaro, the death of her son Christian at 22 years old

“Christian was from 1969, today I would be a grandmother. Who knows”, thus begins the memory of Dalila Di Lazzaro who, interviewed by Corriere della Sera, retraced one of the moments that more than others marked his entire life. Losing a child is the most unnatural and unfair thing there can be in the eyes of a parent and death becomes an accomplice to a pain that can never be completely overcome.

“He came hit by a car on the evening of May 19, 1992 while he was returning home on his scooter, on the Cassia – he continued in his story -. She was 22, I was 37. I had her when I was fifteen. We were very close, never a problem with him. He was studying, he wanted to become a dentist, he should have gone to the United States to improve his skills. He was a guitarist, he played in a small band that also performed at the PalaEur. Only after his death did I know that he composed songs, the guys in his band told me.”

The actress, who retired from the stage due to the chronic pain she lives with, explained that that tragic evening she should have gone to dinner with John Wayne’s son, Ethan, and Francesca Dellera. “I was shooting a film with them and I asked Christian if he wanted to come with me. He said no: ‘I’m going to play with my friends; it’s the first Saturday after the CAR, I’m with them’”. Christian he had chosen to join the Armythus deciding to undertake training in Benevento of which mother Dalila was “very proud”.

The great pain of Dalila Di Lazzaro

That May 19, 1992 continues to echo in the heart of one grieving mother who will never forget the details of an evening that changed his life forever. It all happened after the dinner she had planned when, upon returning home around three in the morning, she received a suspicious phone call to which no one responded.

“I wasn’t worried but when I woke up in the morning I found a message on the answering machine. It was terrible. She was from the hospital: ‘Unfortunately, his son is here. He’s in the mortuary, he should come and get his things.’ But how do you leave a message like that? At the morgue, before stroking it for the last time I blindfolded myself. I wanted to remember him, but while alive,” she explained.

Finding comfort in such cases is very difficult but the actress recalled with emotion and emotion the subsequent meeting with Pope Wojtyla: “I went, he took my head, I was in tears. She asked me if I believed, I said yes. She looked at me with blue eyes and comforted me: ‘There are no words, though know that he will always be with you, remember that‘”. Her words that she has never forgotten about her and that came back to her mind after meeting one of her son’s colleagues last month: “She had red eyes. I looked at it, I saw my son not as he was, but as he could have been. Then we remembered the oath. Christian joked about it: ‘Mum, my friends saw you in the stands, now they know that I’m your son, I’m so ashamed.’ He laughed, though. After the ceremony we took photos with the officers and troops.”
