The demolition will have to proceed in via Di Giacomo, a Carovignoof the property where an accident occurred on Thursday morningexplosion which caused the death of the 66-year-old Cosimo Guarini. The decision emerged, for security reasons, at the end of the first phase of investigations launched in synergy between the police forces and the municipal offices of Carovigno. The structural damage to the ground floor apartment which is located a few hundred meters from Corso Umberto is too serious. Meanwhile, the man’s body is still available to the Brindisi prosecutor’s office, which will have to decide whether or not to carry out an autopsy on Guarini’s body. The body is currently in the morgue of the Ostuni cemetery. It is not excluded that the final decision could be made today by the public prosecutor in charge of the file. Also due to the first collapse, the Municipality of Carovigno, through two ordinances, had ordered the safety measures and the ban on the use of two rooms located in the apartments adjacent to Guarini’s. The subsequent investigations have in fact confirmed that the property currently constitutes a serious danger to public safety: hence the need to carry out safety interventions quickly, through the demolition of what remains, and the ban access to the property. From the first findings from the firefighters and other law enforcement agencies, it appears certain that the explosion occurred due to a gas leak from a stove that the man was trying to light almost at dawn to keep warm. On Thursday morning, every attempt by the 118 health workers who intervened to check on his condition after what happened was in vain.
The rescue
The activities of the firefighters and rescuers were not easy as they continued for hours, in a precarious context, among the debris caused by the explosion that had invaded the house and the upper part of the house torn apart by the explosion is for a large collapsed portion. Many poured into the streets on Thursday morning shortly after 6.30am when the roar was heard. A general fear in the neighborhood which turned into pain when the death of Guarini, known as a reserved and gentle person, was confirmed. On site for several hours, the carabinieri of the local station and the local police officers isolated the area near the place where the explosion occurred to allow the recovery and safety operations of the body. Words of condolence to the man’s family also came from the mayor of Carovigno Massimo Lanzilotti who spent several hours on Thursday to follow the complicated work of the firefighters and the phases of making the property safe. The man lived alone after his mother’s death about a year ago, but was cared for by his family, in particular his brother and two sisters. After the green light from the prosecutor’s office, expected in the next few hours, the funeral of Cosimo Guarini will be able to take place.
