restyling of Piazza del Comune, welcome back slabs

Goodbye cobblestones, welcome back slabs in Piazza del Comune. A novelty that in fact recovers an element of Viterbo as it was.

As underlined by the mayor Chiara Frontini who yesterday, with the start of the installation of the new paving «which will restore the historic slabs, bringing the main square of the city back to its original appearance», stated «Piazza del Comune will be a new square» .

«An intervention – added the first citizen – which enhances the identity and redevelops the heart of the historic center, combined with the restoration of the façade of the Palazzo del Podestà and the opening of the Civic Tower».

A choice, that of returning to slabs for road paving, which could be a winning one not only on an aesthetic level but above all in terms of maintenance and durability, given the ease with which cobblestones break or “jump” from the road surface.

And while the heart of Viterbo winks at a more traditional and sober look, another square in the northern quadrant reopens its recently completed construction sites. After months of work, and consequent inconveniences to traffic, the orange fences have reappeared in Piazza della Rocca. On the side of the fountain, in front of the Grandori, and in front of the largest arch of Porta Fiorentina.

Three holes on one side and another, larger in size, complete with water. The location of the construction sites, at least at the moment, does not appear to cause traffic disruption. Even if it is not an encouraging image to have to review the works in progress in the same area where traffic has been slowed down and congested for several months due to them.

The only positive note, for the municipal coffers and for the people of Viterbo, is that the reorganization will not have an additional cost.

At least according to what was declared by the councilor for public works Stefano Floris.

«For a couple of months already – he stated – these localized failures had been paid attention to by the municipal technicians and the works management. The company had undertaken to review the anomalous areas, and yesterday it began to carry out the restoration work entirely at its own expense”.
