At least forty-two people were killed due to the explosion of one dam in a city north of the capital of Kenya, Nairobi. Since mid-March there has been an environmental emergency in Kenya, with floods which have been devastating the country for weeks. The heavy rains have already caused around a hundred of deaths. The latest accident dates back to Monday 29 April, when a dam collapsed near Mai Mahiuin Nakuru County, caused dozens dead and missing.

Rescue teams are at work trying to find any survivors, searching through the mud and rubble. “Forty-two is a conservative estimate. There are still many people buried in the mud, we are working towards their recovery,” Kihika said.

Meanwhile, Kenya has postponed the meeting by a week reopening from the schools due to the rains. The Ministry of Education explained on Sunday evening that some schools were “affected” by the flood. Local media reported that more than 100 schools were flooded, some with collapsed walls and blown away roofs. Furthermore, one on Sunday boat capsized in the county of Garissa, in northern Kenya. Rescue services reported that more than one dozen of people are still missing as a result of the accident.
