The medical director of the Niguarda hospital in Milan, Mario MelazziniAnd investigated. The investigation that concerns him is from prosecutor’s office of Messina and involves among others the current Sicilian Health Councillor, Giovanna Volo. In the center is the management of the private clinical complex «Nemosud» who dealt with neurological rehabilitation within the Messina Polyclinic.
The investigation was started in 2019 following the doctor’s report and it matters nine under investigation for embezzlement and corruption for an act contrary to official duties. It’s about Alberto Fontana52 years old, former president of the Aurora onlus foundation (which managed the Nemo Sud clinical center in Messina), Giuseppe Laganga Senzio47 years old, former administrative director of the Messina Polyclinic, Melazzini65 years old, also former president of the Aurora onlus foundation, Giuseppe Pecoraro75 years old, extraordinary commissioner of the Polyclinic, Paolina Reitano64 years old, former health director of the Polyclinic, Marco Restuccia60 years old, general director of the Polyclinic, Giuseppe Vita72 years old, director of the Neurology operational unit of the Polyclinic, the current regional health councilor Flight68 years old, former medical director of the university hospital, Michele Vullo, 68 years old, former administrative director of the Polyclinic. The investigation resulted in preventive seizure of assets worth 11 million euros and a temporary ban on contracting with the public administration and carrying out business in the healthcare sector towards Life, Melazzini, Fontana and Senzio,
Councilor Volo informed the President of the Region, «despite the fact that these are facts relating to a period prior to my role as councilor» and says she is calm and aware of having always acted in full compliance with the rules», ready to «quickly clarify ” your position. Melazzini is instead evaluating what to do with the leaders of the Lombardy Region with respect to his position at Niguarda.
The doctor from whose complaint the investigation started, at the time working at the University Polyclinic of Messina, had reported several irregularities in the management of the private clinical center «Nemosud», established in 2012, to carry out neurological rehabilitation activities at the hospital site. Starting from 2012 and until June 2021 (year of closure of the clinical center), therefore, through the stipulation of agreements, increasingly advantageous for the structure, a private clinic would be allowed to operate in a public hospital, with costs borne by the treasury, in the absence of authorization and accreditation from the Sicilian Region. It also emerged that the managers of the Polyclinic at the time would have arbitrarily outsourced the neuro-rehabilitation services to the private centre, canceling the reimbursement of expenses by the Regional Health Service. The suspects would, therefore, distracted public fundsallocating significant sums of money belonging to the public structure to the «Nemosud» clinical center.
