The executor of OJ Simpson’s estate has revealed the cause of the former football star’s death.
Malcolm LaVergne said Friday, April 26, at The Hollywood Reporter that Simpson died on April 10 after a battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
Simpson first announced that he had cancer in May 2023. Although he has shared some health updates on social media, the specific diagnosis had not previously been made public.
Simpson’s family revealed on April 11 that OJ Simpson had died by posting a message on X, but without specifying anything about the type of cancer that caused his death.
“On April 10, our father Orenthal James Simpson succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you respect their wishes for privacy,” the statement released by the family indicated.
LaVergne represented Simpson from 2009 until his death earlier this month.
OJ Simpson’s death followed a life marked by success in sports and Hollywood that turned into a murder suspicion and an armed robbery conviction.
The former Hall of Fame football star became an actor before becoming infamous for being accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in the case dubbed “the trial of century”. Simpson was ultimately acquitted of the murder charges. The former sportsman has always maintained his innocence and the double murder of Goldman and Brown Simpson remains unsolved.
Speaking shortly after Simpson’s death at THRLaVergne said she will ensure that any requests made by Goldman’s parents to recover the millions awarded to them in a 1998 civil judgment against Simpson will be accepted by the summer, and that she plans to be “hyper-transparent” with both Brown’s families Simpson than Goldman.
In 2022, Fred Goldman said a THR that he has not seen any money from Simpson following the ruling in the 1997 civil trial verdict, the total of which he says is increased by 10% each year.
