- 1840: The foundation stone for the Palace of Westminster in London is laid. The building, home to the United Kingdom Parliament, suffered a fire in 1834 which almost completely destroyed it.
- 1975: Niki Lauda wins the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the wheel of Ferrari. The race was marked by a serious accident involving several drivers, including Lauda himself, who was seriously burned.
