Eminem announces new album, ‘The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)’ will be released in the summer

The rapper announces a new album, his first in four years, with a trailer that shows live news coverage from the scene of a crime. It was Slim Shady who was killed, the alter ego who represents the most irreverent side of Marshall Mathers

With a 30-second trailer released on social media, Eminem announced his return to the recording scene. The Detroit-born rapper, who will turn 52 on October 17, is ready to release his twelfth solo studio album, his first in four years. The title of the album will be The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”the release date is not yet precise but it will still be next summer.

At the crime scene

The trailer stages a live news link from the scene of a crime: the death of Slim Shady, Eminem’s alter ego (born Marshall Bruce Mathers III) since his debut. “Thanks to his complex, often criticized tongue-twisting rhymes, the anti-hero known as Slim Shady has never been short of enemies,” says the journalist followed by the testimony of 50 Cent, a long-time friend of Eminem: “ He’s not a friend, he’s a psychopath,” she says.

“IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME”

Then the reporter speaks again: “The same crude lyrics and controversial antics may have ultimately led to his death. Follow me as we piece together the events that led to the murder of Slim Shady.” The short film ends with the testimony of a man with a pixelated face and a disguised voice: “It was only a matter of time for Slim Shady,” he says a moment before leaning forward, ending up beyond the area delimited by the pixels and revealing his true face: precisely that of Eminem.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE TITLE?

The album’s title and trailer suggest Eminem’s intention to definitively close a very long phase of his career, which began in 1996 with the EP Infinite and exploded three years later with The Slim Shady LP and the single My Name Is. After almost 30 years, in short, Eminem seems determined to definitively put Slim Shady’s villain costume, the most irreverent and evil side of him, in the wardrobe, perhaps to embrace a new phase of his career. That phrase that concludes the trailer, “it was only a matter of time for Slim Shady”, pronounced by the artist himself, seems like a real manifesto. Unless it’s yet another joke from an artist who has always walked in balance between the deepest contents and sarcasm, between personal introspection and the politically incorrect.
