HISTORY – Angelo was born in Casale, a small hamlet in the middle of the Gualdo countryside. His parents are humble farmers. He was left fatherless at a very early age and his mother was forced to work hard to support the small family unit. The young boy, already sweet-hearted and altruistic, worries about his peers who are poorer than him and gives up his bread to feed them.
A story that has come down to us tells that one day, after a heated argument with his mother, because the boy took bread from the house to give it to the poor, Angelo curses her and leaves the house to go to work in the fields. Returning in the evening, he hears the church bells ringing, runs into the house and finds his mother lying dead on the bed.
The episode changes the life of young Angelo who, overwhelmed by remorse and feeling responsible for what had happened to his mother, decides to leave as a pilgrim towards Santiago de Compostela, in Spain.
Returning from the long journey he decides to become a monk in the nearby Abbey of San Benedetto in Gualdo Tadino, but he will soon feel the need to live in close contact with God and obtains permission to lead a hermitic life at the hermitage of Capodacqua where he will remain until to death. On January 15, 1324, while the bells of the Abbey of San Benedetto rang by themselves, Angelo was found dead. It is said that as his body passed along the road that led to the convent of San Benedetto, the hawthorn hedges and flax fields miraculously flourished, as they still do today, after seven hundred years, every 15th January.
