Last week in the Aula magna of the Bruno Touschek Scientific High School, the event organized by the Grottaferratese Youth City Council regarding the campaign for bone marrow donation took place.

Several fourth and fifth classes of high school were involved, precisely to raise awareness among adult children about the importance of donating. The members of the Admo (Bone Marrow Donors Association) were present: Alberto Farinacci (Vice President), Stefania Pala and Benedetta Bruni. After the speech and the initial welcome given by the school director Professor Paolo D’Anna, the floor was given to the Vice President of the Admo Association, Alberto Farinacci, who immediately captured the attention of the children by telling the story of his son Andrea, 27 year old boy who suddenly fell ill with leukemia. Mr. Farinacci’s words filled the Aula Magna and entered the hearts of the children and many of them were unable to hold back tears of emotion. They were also shown a short film about Andrea’s story entitled “Major Tom” created to raise awareness of bone marrow donation and which was presented for the first time on 16 September 2022 in the Fleming room of the University of Tor Vergata , Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The work, produced by Andrea Torre, in co-production with Movi Production and Synart Production and directed by Simone Manzi, tells the story of Andrea Farinacci, a boy from San Cesareo taken from life too soon by Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a only 27 years old. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/mh7QCKtfkLHr2jGp/

After the touching speech by Mr. Alberto Farinacci, the floor was given to Dr. Flavia Mallegni, Hematologist at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic, who explained the methods of bone marrow donation and also the possibilities of recovering from the disease in the event that a compatible donor. The Doctor managed to explain a very technical medical topic with extreme clarity, also showing how bone marrow donation is a painless and quick practice. Finally Cecilia Bianco, secretary of the Youth Municipal Council, intervened, reminding the audience of young students how being donors is an act of extreme importance and civic and social value.

At the end of the various interventions, the children were invited to ask questions, of which there were many and very punctual, underlining the interest they showed in this topic. Please note that on May 18th it will be possible to register for the donor register at the AVIS office in Grottaferrata in Via Giuseppe Verdi, 12.
