RAI license fee, the tax could increase starting from 2025
Even if there followed a series of controversies, the RAI license fee is still paid into the bill today. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgettiannounced that, following the EU directives and the provisions of the new Finance Law, from 2025 this payment method will have to be reviewed.
While awaiting a final decision from Meloni government regarding the future of the RAI license fee, it has already been implemented for 2024 a reduction in the amount from 90 to 70 euros for the private subscription, thanks to the 2024 Budget Law. The most important news, in any case, is the proposal for a bill to the gradual abolition of the feewhich would be preceded by a planned annual reduction of 20%, which would lead to the total elimination of the tax.
The question that comes forward concerns the method to be implemented compensate for the lack of revenue for public television. Among the hypotheses are the introduction of a regional tax and/or the incorporation of a specific payment in the tax returneven if, in fact, the most plausible solution seems to be the payment via postal payment slips.
How to request tax exemption
It is also possible to request the exemption from the payment of the Rai license fee, if specific requirements are met.
Exist two RAI license fee categories: for use private and for use public (or special), each of which has different rates.
The elderly people over 75 years old they can request exemption for private use, provided they meet certain requirements related to age, housing situation and family income. Specifically, it is necessary that the main home is the only one equipped with a television and that the total income of the user and the cohabiting spouse does not exceed 8,000 euros per year.
