The GESP celebrates 60 years: “Sanpellegrinesi, go back to climbing the Zucco”

Wednesday 1 Maythe day on which the “Workers Day”on the top of Monte Zucco above San Pellegrino Terme celebrations will be held for 60th anniversary of the foundation of the GESP (San Pellegrino Hikers Group). Presenting this important event to us is the person who has held the role of President within the association for 16 years: the 48-year-old from San Pellegrino Martino Pesenti.

“Our group, up until today, has always retained the same characteristics: from trail maintenance to the various activities we carry out on our site Mount Zucco up to cultural and naturalistic trips. We always try to satisfy all the requests that our people make partners. Furthermore, over the years, we have ‘evolved’ with the addition of young people within our association where they help us with the website or by proposing many new activities and initiatives – says Martino. – It is a great pride to carry on a group born 60 years ago also because, let’s face it, these years are not at all few. I grew up within the GESP when my father, Michele Pesenti, was its President and I have experienced all the evolution that the association has made in these long years”.

The evening of Tuesday 30 Aprilon the occasion of this important event, some GESP volunteers will find themselves at the top of Monte Zucco for theillumination of the Cross. Instead, the actual party will always take place on Monte Zucco, in addition to the traditional meeting of the numerous members (who are around 800), Wednesday 1 May.

Curious to find out what will be done? Well the program provides (at the bottom of the page you can see the poster) a Holy Mass which will be celebrated at 10.30 in memory of all the members of the GESP, at the Cross, by the parish priest Don Alessandro Nava with the participation of the “Figli di Nuovi” Choir of San Giovanni Bianco. During the day there will be the possibility of using the bar service where delicious sandwiches will be waiting for you, with a good glass of wine or sip a glass of water or a cup of coffee.

Finally, to celebrate this important milestone achieved, a commemorative plaque will be inaugurated which was positioned on a side wall of the small church on Monte Zucco: “This plaque was created free of charge by the sculptor, who has also been a member of the GESP for several years, Alessandro Verdi (the wooden statue representing Pope John XXIII which is located in the town center of San Pellegrino Terme in Via San Carlo is also his). We decided to create it to remember everything that has been done in recent years by our volunteers and by those who preceded us and who unfortunately are no longer here with us” – continues Pesenti.

Continuing Martino wanted to make a dutiful thanks to the collaborating members of the GESP group who are always ready to help when needed and especially during the various initiatives that have been organised. Finally the President wanted to send a message to his fellow villagers saying: “Compared to years ago today, on Monte Zucco, you can see plus the presence of foreigners compared to the people who live here in San Pellegrino Terme. Therefore I invite the San Pellegrino families to experience the places of this mountain more and to stay in our refuges. You will see that you will like this experience!”.

To conclude, for those who don’t know, among the various events that the GESP organizes, two very important ones stand out: the second Sunday of July there will be the traditional one “Pumpkin Festival” while theSeptember 1st there will be the third edition of the “Vertical Zucco”.
