On the occasion of the next G7 summit, which will see Brindisi host delegations from the major countries of the world, the CGIL of Brindisi raises an urgent health alarm that requires immediate attention and intervention. Despite the massive infrastructure investments made in preparation for the event, the crisis in the local healthcare system was negligently neglected.

For years, Brindisi’s healthcare sector has been marked by serious structural problems and staff shortages, a situation that now risks becoming unsustainable with the arrival of thousands of summit participants, together with the influx of summer tourists. The forecasts are clear: our healthcare system, already struggling, will not be able to withstand the further pressure without immediate intervention.

Our appeal is directed to the Puglia Region and to the ASL BR: it is essential to authorize without further delay a hiring plan that represents the minimum necessary to maintain the basic services necessary to ensure the LEAs. More than 100 nurses have no certainty about their future work, and the holidays of the remaining staff will be blocked to deal with the emergency. Despite this, the stabilization procedures for all affected employees have not yet been initiated.

And the CGIL Public Service of Brindisi has already expressed itself clearly on this point, having always reported and stigmatized the shortage of staff. We therefore ask that the hiring plans, already authorized but never implemented, become effective immediately, starting from Brindisi. It is unthinkable that, while millions are spent on infrastructure improvements, the sector most critical to the well-being of citizens and visitors is neglected.

The Puglia Region and the ASL must ensure that the necessary hires are made to fill the pre-existing staff deficit and prevent the collapse of services during the critical period of the G7 and the summer season. This is not only a necessary act, but an urgent necessity to guarantee everyone’s safety and health.

As Brindisi prepares to be on the world stage, we cannot allow our ability to provide essential health services to be compromised. It is time for the Puglia Region and the ASL to make quick and effective decisions to address this crisis. The health of our citizens and guests cannot and must not be put at risk. And Healthcare is the “business card” on which the success of the event will be measured for which we cannot afford to arrive unprepared despite knowing it. We ask for urgent and adequate intervention for Brindisi, now more than ever.

The time has come to definitively clarify: the ASL of Brindisi has for years been penalized in terms of number of beds (the lowest in Puglia in percentage terms); with respect to healthcare construction (new hospitals have been built or are under construction everywhere except in our province); infrastructural and technological investments are insufficient; Every year the number of personnel on duty drops dramatically.

Therefore, we invite you not to implement further bureaucratic alchemy in order not to hire and above all to expel the staff in service who have guaranteed the LEAs with extreme sacrifice: all the eligible precarious workers must be stabilized immediately, otherwise we will tell the whole world, the days of the G7, which wants to further penalize the Public Health Service of the province of Brindisi.
