‘Santa’: Optosening arrives, the technology that monitors gas pipes in real time

In recent days, the Mayor of the city, Paolo Donadoni, met with a delegation from Italgas, the company concessionaire of the city’s natural gas distribution service. The initiative had the aim of illustrating the operating methods adopted by the company in operating the city network, with particular reference to pipeline monitoring techniques.

Specifically, Italgas presented Optosensing, cutting-edge technology which allows, through the application of two fiber optic sensors on the pipe, to monitor in real time any variation in position and/or temperature of the installed network that may be caused, for example, from geological movements or neighboring activities in the area. Thanks to the Optosensing system it is therefore possible to both optimize maintenance interventions and know in real time the status of each monitored pipe segment.

Italgas put into operation the first section of the network equipped with Optosensing technology on the national territory in March 2024, thus starting continuous and timely monitoring of the infrastructure. The data collected by the system can now be made available to the authorities both for research purposes and for careful control of the territory.

«Technological innovation is the main driver on which Italgas’ development has hinged in recent years – declared the CEO of Italgas Reti Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco -. In fact, the Company’s efforts have always been aimed at continuous research, in Italy and abroad, of innovative solutions capable of responding to the need to improve the company’s performance and the level of quality and safety of the service offered. , with concrete benefits for the community and, in perspective, for the entire gas distribution sector and for the country. With Optosensing technology, Italgas introduces a new cutting-edge solution to protect strategic infrastructures against landslides and other types of geological risk in a territory, such as the Italian one, which is particularly sensitive to this aspect. In this way we further raise the level of security of our networks to protect communities and territories.”

«We are very satisfied with this avant-garde work. – declared the Mayor of Santa Margherita Ligure Paolo Donadoni – We look with interest at technological innovation and the applications it can have in the area, especially if improvements are achieved, in this case on the control and maintenance of the network. We thank Italgas with whom we are working in synergy and a spirit of collaboration to achieve growth objectives in the quality of services”.
