Francesco Paolo De Siena from Padua wins the “Maria Grazia Carraro” scholarship

Yesterday evening, in the meeting room of the San Martino di Belluno, in the presence of the Health Councilor of the Veneto Region Manuela Lanzarin, it was awarded a scholarship in memory of Maria Grazia Carraroformer general director of Ulss Dolomiti, who passed away prematurely last year.

In fact, to honor the memory of director Carraro, Ulss Dolomiti has established a scholarship for the best specialization thesis in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine discussed at the Universities of Padua, Verona and Udine in 2023. Among the 10 applications received, a commissionchaired by the health director of Ulss Dolomiti, selected the best three which were presented in the evening by the young doctors in front of a packed room, after a moving remembrance by Maria Grazia Carraro.

“When I proposed establishing a scholarship to remember Dr. Carraro, I found enthusiasm and availability both within the organization and in the universities – he recalled Commissioner Giuseppe Dal Ben – the scholarship is a way to continue training and education, which I hope will continue over time”.

The presentation of the theses was introduced by a lectio magistralis by Professor Silvio Brusaferro, former president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, entitled “Public Health and Community”.

“What determines health and well-being? People and communities with their own choices, their own activities, the ability to respond and adapt to external factors and emerging critical issues are decisive. Being informed and aware protagonists and actively engaging in choices that involve all aspects of individual and community life is fundamental. Just as it is essential to strengthen Prevention, Public Health and the National Health Service. We know that health achievements can be reversible and, for this reason, long-term perspectives, coherence and continuity in programs are necessary” he explained Professor Brusaferro.

The three theses selected were those of: Francesco Paolo De Siena of the University of Padua with the title “Overcrowding in the emergency room: experimental project for measuring and managing the phenomenon in the ULSS 8 Berica company”; Giada Mazzilis of the University of Udine with title “Territorial variability and temporal trend of mortality in the Region and Districts of Friuli Venezia Giulia: data analysis and interpretative hypotheses”; Giulia De Mattia of the University of Verona with title “Taking charge of the migrant population: the role of the Prevention Department. Experience at the ULSS Dolomiti Company”.

The commission has chosen to award the scholarship, worth 2 thousand euros, collected last year in memory of Dr. Carraro, to Francesco Paolo De Siena whose work was particularly appreciated.

The scholarship was awarded by Councilor Lanzarin, Commissioner Dal Ben and Doctor Carraro’s husband, son and brother, moved by the memory. The evening closed with the notes of Signore delle cime, proposed by the violin of maestro Ivan Zasso.
