The regional secretary of the Social Democrats of Sicily, Antonio Matasso, met with the regional spokesperson of Più Europa, Palmira Mancuso, following the decision of the national secretariat of the Rising Sun to grant a broad mandate to Umberto Costi, national secretary of SD, for an agreement with the “United States of Europe” list.

The two political exponents jointly expressed the condolences of the entire secular, liberal and democratic socialist world for the passing of Vincenzo Agostino, on the day of the funeral of the father of the police officer Nino, killed by the mafia together with his wife. Antonio Matasso, who is also president of the socialist anti-mafia foundation “Carmelo Battaglia”, recalled Vincenzo Agostino’s roots in the Nebroid center of Castell’Umberto, underlining the occasions in which he had participated in meetings and debates relating to the history of the Sicilian socialist anti-mafia movement , always bearing precious testimonies together with his wife who passed away just over five years ago. For her part, Palmira Mancuso observed that the fight for truth and justice on the barbaric murder of Nino Agostino and Ida Castelluccio, pregnant at the time of the crime, will have to continue, not only through the memory of the mafia victims but with an active presence alongside who fights it even today.

Mancuso and Matasso also communicated the adhesion of their respective parties to the demonstrations organized in Sicily by the Italian Federation of Partisan Associations (FIAP), on the occasion of 25 April, also in the year in which the centenary of the death of Giacomo Matteotti is remembered and in the month which marks the ninety-eighth anniversary of the death of Giovanni Amendola.

The groups led by Riccardo Magi and Umberto Costi also plan joint initiatives on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the killing of Eugenio Colorni, the young socialist and partisan of the Matteotti brigades who collaborated with Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi on the “Ventotene Manifesto”, text founding of that Europeanism shared by Più Europa and the Social Democrats: an inspiration that identifies the United States of Europe as the point of arrival of a long process that has seen socialists and liberals among the protagonists. The two political forces also confirm their commitment to the enlargement of the European Union to Ukraine, as well as to Georgia and Armenia, in the imminence of the day of 24 April dedicated to the commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. «The European dream is increasingly within reach and Sicilian secularists and progressives continue to have faith in democracy and freedom, supported by reason and science», conclude Palmira Mancuso and Antonio Matasso.
