A story of great altruism, which despite originating from death, gave life to other people: the organs of a 23 year old boy, who died following a road accident, saved the lives of six other people. In fact, the 23-year-old’s heart, liver, kidneys and corneas were removed at the Sant’Anna and San Sebastiano hospital in Caserta and reached six patients awaiting transplant.
The young man had signed the declaration of will to donate organs and tissues: when the family became aware of his wishes, they agreed to the removal of the organs, which was carried out only after the irreversibility of the brain functions from part of the medical commission responsible for this purpose. As, four transplant medical teamscoming from Campania and Sicily, proceeded with the operation.
“With organ donation, a death is transformed into a multiplier of life. Transplants save patients who otherwise would not make it but, without donations, there can be no transplants” declared the director of the UOC of Anesthesia and Resuscitation Pasquale De Negri and the contact person for the Organ and Tissue Donation Coordination Unit Patrizia Tidona. The Caserta hospital expressed its condolences and closeness to the parents and family of the 23-year-old.
