Cologne, 04/23/2024 – Tosçelik Spiral Boru, one of the successful companies of Tosyalı, an international steel producer based in Turkey, recognized as the largest pipe manufacturer in Europe, has won the tender for the “Rhine Water Pipeline” (RWTL).

The Rhine Water Pipeline (RWTL) represents one of Germany’s most significant environmental transformation projects and aims to transport water from the Rhine River to fill disused open-pit mines. In the context of this project, which will be implemented by RWE, a leading German energy company, Tosçelik Spiral Boru will supply 130,000 tons and 105,600 meters of large diameter pipes with a diameter of 2235 mm. Tosyalı and RWE Power signed a contract at RWE’s conference center Paffendorf Castle near Cologne.

Regarding this project, Fuat Tosyalı, president of Tosyalı, said: “As a leading European company for eco-friendly steel pipes, this project has a particular significance for our company, also because the idea behind it is unique. At Tosyalı, we place sustainability at the center of investments in every phase of our production , consciously engaging in the development of technologies aimed at ecological transformation. Therefore, when a work with the highest environmental sensitivity is announced, such as the Rhine Water Pipeline, we are even more motivated to participate in the project to supply our low-energy steel pipes. carbon footprint.”

Dr. Lars Kulik, CTO of RWE Power, said: ” For our project, we need large-diameter, high-quality pipes that can transport water from the Rhine River to the mine lakes for many decades. Another key aspect of our tender was the manufacturer’s attitude towards the environment We are pleased to have Tosyalı by our side, who thanks to their vertically integrated production, from raw material to finished products, guarantees sustainability and employs the most advanced technologies with their support, we will sustainably transform open pit mines into lakes for the benefit of future generations.”

Tosçelik Spiral Boru, a growing company

Tosçelik Spiral Boru, one of the successful companies of Tosyalı, a global steel producer from Turkey and one of the largest spiral pipe producers in Europe, continues to grow by participating in new projects thanks to the agreements made. The company also contributes to the green transformation initiated in many European countries as part of the European Union’s Green Deal.

The bridge for green transformation from Türkiye to Germany

By 2030, German power generation company RWE will stop operating its coal-fired power plants and open-pit mines. With this project, the company will redevelop the disused opencast mines of Garzweiler and Hambach by transforming them into lakes. For this purpose, it will pump water from the Rhine River, near Düsseldorf and Cologne, through a 45 km underground route using pressurized pipes. This will not only reintroduce former open-pit mines into nature, but also provide clean water to protected areas and stabilize the regional aquifer.

The pipes used in the project will be Tosçelik Spiral Pipes

Tosyalı, chosen by RWE as the supplier for this investment in the context of green transformation, achieves the lowest carbon footprint steel production in the industry. The company, which makes sustainability-oriented investments in its facilities in Turkey and Algeria, is one of the global pioneers in green steel production, thanks to investments in clean energy sources such as solar and hydrogen. In Turkey, the company achieved an installed capacity of 235 MW with the SPP project, achieved by investing in all its facilities simultaneously, making it the company with the largest rooftop SPP in the world. With this project, it has become one of the greenest steel producers in the world, avoiding approximately 171 million kg of carbon emissions. Tosyalı also invests in hydrogen, the energy of the future, with new generation technologies. The second DRI production plant in Algeria, built with MIDREX technology, will be able to operate 100% on hydrogen. Thanks to these sustainability-oriented investments, Tosyalı produces the greenest and most environmentally friendly steel in the world, with the lowest carbon footprint globally.

RWE’s significant investment in green transformation will use Tosyalı’s sustainability-oriented eco-steel tubes. The project, which involves the construction of a three-pipe steel pipeline along a route of approximately 45 km, is expected to begin at the end of 2024 and be completed by the end of 2029.
