After hours of criticism and comments via social media, Marco Liorni has decided to dispel any doubts about his position. No praise of fascist patriotism (in many cases imposed on Italians, among other things), but the story of a historical event according to the mentality of the time.
“When we recorded and this question appeared on the screen it gave me emotions, because it has been talked about many times in the family – he explained in a video shared on Instagram -. My grandparents in particular had talked to me about it, even my father who was born in those days, so he in turn reported things my grandmother had told me. It was a day of great suffering. Taking off your gold wedding ring to put on an iron one in that Italy was a painful gesture, but also a gesture of patriotism. This is what they told me and what history says seen with the spirit of the times, not with today’s eyes. In that Italy, at that moment, on that day, donating gold to the homeland was done out of a patriotic spirit, then there were also stories of people who did it but didn’t want to do it.”
Finally, his position regarding the regime: “I wanted to say to anyone who might have thought that I was praising fascism through this thing and also to the internet thugs (…) that I am an anti-fascist, so I could never praise fascism (…). I was describing the emotion of that day from the perspective of those times (…). I owed you this clarification. I feel sorry for those who interpreted it in a different way, perhaps I should have been more clear but that was the intention. I think we also need to all calm down a bit and discuss more constructive issues and in a more civilized way.”
