With the 2-1 victory in the derby against Milan on Monday evening, the Inter men’s football team won the Serie A championship with five matchdays to spare (the gap with the second in the standings, Milan, is by 17 points, and can no longer be filled). For Inter, coached by Simone Inzaghi, it is the twentieth Scudetto: from next year the team will therefore be able to have two stars on the shirt above the team crest, given that in Italy traditionally each team acquires a star for every ten championships won.

Inter’s championship victory had been expected for some time, but the way in which it happened is remarkable because it had never happened before that a Scudetto was decided in a Milan derby, generally the match most heartfelt by the fans and with a symbolic value greater than the others. Against Milan, Inter took the lead in the first half with a goal from defender Francesco Acerbi in the 18th minute, then went 2-0 up in the 49th with a goal from striker Marcus Thuram. Milan scored their only goal in the 80th through defender Fikayo Tomori but it didn’t change the outcome of the match. In the final minutes there were some rather harsh clashes between some players which led the referee to three expulsions: those of Denzel Dumfries for Inter, and of Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria for Milan.

Inter had last won the championship in 2021, when the team was coached by Antonio Conte. For Simone Inzaghi it is the first Scudetto won as a coach.

The 2023-2024 championship was substantially dominated by Inter, who rose to first place in the table on the fourth matchday by winning the first leg derby 5-1 and from that moment on they always remained in front, trailing Juventus (long second in ranking, before being overtaken by Milan) with a 1-0 victory in the direct clash at San Siro. Subsequently, with a series of quite exceptional matches, Inter had increased the gap on Milan and Juventus.

Inzaghi’s team was the best in the championship in every aspect of the game: it was the one that scored the most goals and also the one that conceded the fewest, but according to all the insiders and experts it was also the one that played the most fun and spectacular football. The striker and captain of Inter, Lautaro Martinez, will in all probability be the top scorer of this championship, that is, the player with the most goals scored: he has scored 23 so far and will hardly be able to be reached by Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, who has scored 16.
