On Thursday 18 April a large fire broke out in an illegal landfill located in Rome on the Via Collatina Vecchia, between Palmiro Togliatti and the urban section of the A24.

The Rome Fire Brigade intervened to put out the fire at the landfill with 2 tank trucks, the APS tank (Tank Fire Truck and the earthmoving vehicles of the Special Operations Group.

The fire affected various types of materials and caused thick smoke which caused great discomfort for residents of the surrounding areas. The thick black smoke was visible from several kilometers away.

Fortunately no one was involved in the fire.

The extinguishing operations proved to be complex due to the strong gusts of wind that fanned the flames. They continued throughout the night and into today.

It is not the first time that fires have broken out in that area, affected by illegal settlements and piles of waste. Precisely for this reason the opposition Councilor Stefano Erbaggi thundered against the inaction of the Municipal Administration

In a press note Erbaggi called for an extraordinary plan of interventions to secure areas such as that of Via Collatina, defined as the largest landfill in Europe:

“The protection of citizens and the environment cannot wait any longer, careful prevention activity is needed: the health and safety of the Romans and of the operators who intervened to secure the area in which the largest landfill in the world burned. ‘Europa, which for years has lay in the area between the Togliatti and the urban section of the A24.”

Always Herbs:

“We cannot tolerate this silence, in the face of repeated episodes of fires of waste piles and plants. The environment and citizens cannot wait for a Municipal Administration which, on the subject, to date, has characterized its management by only one element: inaction”.
