During the night a fire devastated the area it once housed the famous «Camino Real» nightclub of Pontecagnano Faiano. The structure, located a few steps from the sea, had been confiscated from organized crime and, abandoned for some time, had been transformed into a open-air landfill. Unfortunately, similar incidents are nothing new: fires of this kind had already occurred in the past, but this time the flames required massive intervention by the firefighters.
The fire broke out around midnight, generating a column of black smoke visible for kilometers away. The firefighters intervened with a fire engine and a tanker, also using foam extinguisher. Due to the amount of waste accumulated in the area they had to work for several hours before managing to put out the fire. The causes of the event have not yet been clarified and the events that led to this tragedy are being investigated by the competent authorities.
The former nightclub was already been the scene of a large fire in 2019, which had completely destroyed the structure. In 2021 the Prefecture of Salerno had the site was seized, which in the meantime had become a real illegal landfill. However, despite the efforts of the institutions in trying to redevelop the area, the problems related to the management of confiscated assets and the fight against degradation continue to persist. A recovery project for the area was announced in 2021, which involved the creation of an anti-violence center financed with funds from the Campania Region intended for the reuse of confiscated assets. However, despite the good intentions and planned investments, last night’s fire is a sad testimony to the challenges still open in the redevelopment process of territories marked by the presence of organized crime.
