Promise kept! MG had announced at the time that the MG3 Hybrid+ would have a price of less than 20,000 euros and now that the price list has been released during the road test, the confirmation has arrived. The new five-door compact car therefore enters the B segment with a straight leg a first price of 19,990 euros. However, the amount to be paid could drop to 16,490 euros considering the launch promo and the imminent Ecobonus. Beyond a super competitive cost, the MG3 Hybrid+ also has other tricks up its sleeve to climb the sales charts. Let’s see how it is made, before moving on to the driving impressions.
Without any worries
There MG3 has dimensions that allow it to play both the role of the second family car and that of the only car in the house. It is in fact 411 cm long, 180 wide and 150 high. Another important measurement for those who pay attention to practicality is the capacity of the trunkwhich is of 293 litres.
The cargo compartment has a regular shape and the only flaw is represented by the threshold, which is a little high and creates a clear step with the support surface. Measurements aside, the bodywork has a line without too many worries, marked by ribs which above all highlight the shape of the side. The most personal element is undoubtedly the front, with the sloping bonnet and the air intakes that seem to bracket the large grille.
Lights and shadows
The layout of the passenger compartment appears more original and not only due to the flattened steering wheel rim. The dashboard houses two digital screens. The instrument display is 7 inches and the infotainment touch screen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, it is 10.25 inches. The first screen has some slightly small writing, while the second has quite intuitive and functional menus. As for the finishes, light and shadow alternate, with details that seem carefully packaged and some cheap-looking plastics. The ADAS equipment is rich. In the suite of systems MG Pilot driving assistance include, for example, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, which together with Traffic Jam Assist allows level 2 assisted driving. They then reply “present!” automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning are available.
One and three
The MG3 is available in three setups that, going in ascending order of equipmentand, they are called Standard, Comfort and Luxury. The shot below – “stolen” during the press presentation – will not win a photography award but it makes it clear what they are the differences in price and equipment between the various versions. Below, in red, also appears what will be the price to pay in the event that one is entitled to the hypothesized state incentives.
Just to give a quick summary, the “basic” Standard version has, among other things, air conditioning, rear parking sensors, a rear view camera, a Bluetooth stereo and four USB ports as standard. The top Luxury trim level features heated front seats and steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery and an electronic key. There are seven colors in the catalogue: Dover White, Como Blue, Diamond Red, Pastel Yellow, Pebble Black, Cosmic Silver and Hampstead Grey. The car among other things can also be driven by choosing a formula with a down payment of around 4,000 euros and installments of 99 euros per month.
One for all
Acting as the common denominator for the entire MG3 Hybrid+ range is a full hybrid engine that with its refinement gives meaning to that + in the name. Under the bonnet there is a 102 HP 1.5 Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine, a 136 HP electric motor and a second electric unit that acts as a motor generator. The teamwork of the first two engines develops the beauty of 195 HP. These are values worthy of a hot hatch, just like the time needed to complete the paperwork 0-100: just 8 seconds. Whoever chooses a car of this type will also care about the average consumption figure, which is 4.4 l/100. However, there is no indication of electric range. However, it is known that the battery is 1.83 kWh and is among the largest in the category which includes, for example, the Toyota Yaris and the Renault Clio. At this point all that remains is to get behind the wheel and see how things go.
