The Guide to Extra Virgin Olive Oils 2024, edited by Slow Food Italia, for 24 years it is a useful tool for making oils, stories and territories known. Made thanks to the contribution of 125 collaborators present throughout Italy, the Guide reviews 686 companies reporting 1071 quality extra virgin oils: a careful snapshot of the situation of Italian olive growing from which the excellence of national production emerges, despite the difficult year.
The Guide is not only intended to be an aid available to professionals and consumers to navigate the complicated world of extra virgin olive oil, but a precious tool to raise awareness of producers and encourage the reader to go and visit them. For Slow Food, oil is an important element not only because it is essential in designing ours food culture and in contributing to the healthiness of our diet, but because it is central to the conservation of the territoryIn the shape the landscapeas well as being one important economic and social resource.
The regions of Southern Italy In Campania there is a good average quality, with few excellences in the various territories. Production was very low in the Caserta and Cilento areas, a decent year between Irpinia and Sannio, good in the Salerno Hills area, while in the Sorrento Peninsula the great charge was nullified by strong fly attacks.
In Puglia the olive growing season began under the best auspices, with abundant spring rains and mild climate, but in the second ten days of July the drought began to be felt. However, irrigated and late olives produced intensely fruity oils, with aromas ranging from bitter to spicy. Quality oils therefore, with remunerative prices also for the sales of olives from pressing, a phenomenon which affected around 40% of the olives in the region.
In Basilicata it was a vintage with many positive elements, starting with a fairly homogeneous load of fruit throughout the territory, with oils that showed a beautiful olfactory quality. Exceptional results for the Majatica variety of Ferrandina.
In Calabria the season was affected by the absence of rain between May and October, but, if we analyze the production results, except for the province of Reggio Calabria, the data is positive from both a quantitative and qualitative point of view. New producers are joining the Guide, and more and more women: a sign of a regional sector in turmoil, oriented towards identity-based productions, corporate and environmental sustainability and protection of biodiversity.
In Sicily, despite the dramatic situation linked to the drought and the complex olive growing campaign, which led to a drop in production and organoleptic variations, many companies have managed to maintain a high level of quality. And, on the subject of biodiversity, extra virgin olive oils from olive growing companies adhering to the Secular Olives Presidium are increasing.
In Sardinia olive production was growing overall, even if climatic events caused poor production in the Center and South. A very good year in the Nuoro area, poorer in the Oristano area and in Southern Sardinia, with some exceptions in the olive groves managed with cultivation methods more rational management and with emergency irrigation.
