A 65-year-old professor from Urbino, Diana Sorini, has died in a road accident with a lorry in the municipality of Vallefoglia, in the Marche region. The teacher lost her life in the violent head-on impact against the truck loaded with sand.

The accident in Vallefoglia

The fatal accident occurred around 2pm on Tuesday 16 April, between the towns of Vallefoglia di Cappone and Capponello. As reconstructed by Rest of the Pugthe teacher was at the wheel of her methane Opel along the road from Pesaro to Urbino, when suddenly, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the car invaded the oncoming lane.

The impact with the truck loaded with sand that was passing by at that moment, driven by a 36-year-old local man, was inevitable: following the collision between the two vehicles the car was thrown away for about ten meters and catches fire.

Some residents who heard the roar of the clash intervened immediately and tried to put out the flames with fire extinguishers.

Alerted by those present, the firefighters intervene on the spot together with the 118 ambulance and the local police. The fire was suffocated, but despite arriving at the accident site within a few minutes, it was already late for the 65-year-old.

Professor Sorini often traveled to work in Riccione, where she taught audiovisual disciplines at the Volta-Fellini scientific-artistic high school. With her in the car were the two child seats with which she occasionally transported her parents nephews.

The testimonies

Some people who provided first aid described the scene to the Rest of the Pug. “I was in front of my house and I heard a great roar – is the testimony of Lucio Tonini – I go out and go towards the car. I see a couple of car seats in the back and immediately think of children. But inside there was only one woman in the driver’s seat. She was breathing hard. We immediately raised the alarm and notified 118 and the firefighters. In fact, we realized that the car was catching fire.”

“Along with us residents, even some passing cars stopped – he said again – We used four fire extinguishers and put out the first fire. But the flames immediately regained strength, thanks to the help of our neighbors we still managed to contain the fire. The car was methane powered. In the meantime, the firefighters arrived and were very quick and did everything they could, even though the area was becoming clogged with cars due to the heavy traffic.”

The father is in serious condition who was driving the car: the man was transported under code red to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Taranto. The driver of the heavy vehicle was also injured and hospitalized in Castellaneta hospital.
