Free and equal: the first meeting on relationships

LLast April 9th, the first round table of our project took place at the State University of Milan Free and equal: for a new idea of equality. The theme? Relations. And how to make them healthy, safe, respectful

The first practical step of the project Free and equal

“Saying” is not enough to eradicate gender violence. Above all, we must “do”. Taking action is the commitment that we at Modern Woman we took the first practical step of the project Free and equal. For a new idea of equalityin collaboration with the DiRe – Women in Network Against Violence association and the University of Milan.

Initiatives against gender violence must dialogue

The first of four working groups took place at the State University of Milan which in the coming months will translate the needs emerging from our Rights Observatory into concrete proposals. Three, in particular, those addressed last April 9th on the subject of relationships: affective education, the definition of consent, the strengthening of safety. We made it the subject of a brainstorming effort that involved representatives of different realities – associations, anti-violence centers, law enforcement agencies, universities and schools – put into dialogue to address the culture of violence. We did this by asking ourselves concrete questions: how can we train teachers to become educators and sentinels of non-violent relationships? How can we make women feel safer both on the street and in their own homes? How can gender stereotypes be put at the door of courtrooms?

We will bring concrete proposals

The answers we have found together aim to strengthen existing initiatives, but above all to propose new ones where they are missing. As recalled by our director Maria Elena Viola, this has been – and will continue to be – our way of “connecting the dots” to put together separate measures and design an action to combat violence that leaves no blank spaces but is complete, tangible, effective. And which we will have the opportunity to tell you in person, along the way. Stay tuned!
